Walt Whitman High School Speech & Debate Team
Welcome to the team. We are excited to have you join. Please find below some information about who we are, what we do and what we need you to do to join.
Who we are
We are a team of usually around 100 members. Team members are from all classes - freshman through seniors. Any student is welcome to join and we have no cuts. We offer 3 types of Debate (Lincoln Douglas, Public Forum and Congressional) and a number of Speech events. Please see our page

What we do
Students usually meet for practice on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm until 8:30pm. All practices are held at Whitman. During practices students work with coaches and other students. Many students choose to compete. Competing is not mandatory but is encouraged. There a monthly local tournaments run by
that many students attend especially those new to Speech and Debate. More experienced debators travel out of town for tournaments.
What we need you to do to join
Attend practices, which are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Whitman from 6:30 until 8:30 PM
Fill out our

. This will enable us to add you to our e-mail distribution lists and ensure that you are kept up to date with team business. Please provide parent/guardian contact information too.
Pay dues. Teams dues cover a portion of the team budget which pays for coaching, league fees and other expenses. The rest comes from donations and fundraising. To pay dues please visit our

The Whitman Speech & Debate Team is a not-for-profit collaboration of parent volunteers, student team members, and coaches.
All funds raised go directly to team expenses.
